Geof Coleman: Building success for 40 years

Our team at Atlantic Civil Products will soon bid farewell to a distinguished colleague. After an impressive 40-year career in the engineered infrastructure sector, Geof Coleman has announced his retirement.

Named ‘Salesman of the Year’ three times, Geof leaves behind a legacy of passion and professionalism. “On the day I started in 1971, I couldn’t have imagined that 40 years later I would have enjoyed such a fulfilling career,” says Geof.

From the factory to the field

After first acquiring a Metal Trade Certificate, Geof actually worked as a jewellery craftsman for a few years before changing direction and returning to university to attain Structural Engineering certification.

“It was through providence alone that I attained a drafting position in this business, initially as Armco (Australia) Pty Ltd and lately as Atlantic Civil Products,” Geof explains.

Geof was bright and hardworking. He advanced quickly within Armco, receiving three promotions in only six years; yet, he still wasn’t fully satisfied.

“While mechanical engineering intrigued me, my efforts were confined to our factory equipment,” explains Geof. “I began to take interest in the end use of our products.”

Geof wanted out of the factory and into the field. So, when a Sales Trainee position became available, Geof was eager to apply.

A natural born salesman

During Geof’s first year on the job, he received a promotion, was named ‘Salesman of the Year’ (for the first time), and travelled to Asia to join the International Sales Team. Geof’s unique background allowed him to easily toggle between engineer and salesman, and Geof knew immediately that he’d found his calling.

“Throughout my sales career, I’ve always got a thrill from gaining a client’s trust, developing a winning bid, and then securing the order,” Geof explains.

During the years that followed, Geof’s career maintained the same momentum. He held many titles and worked for Australia’s most powerful infrastructure companies.

Some career highlights include:

  • Being named ‘Salesman of the Year’ in ‘80, ‘84 and ‘85
  • Conducting training seminars for agencies and major clients around Asia
  • Overseeing a number of international factory developments
  • Negotiating foreign infrastructure policies and acquiring government approval for complex projects
  • Producing promotional videos to be used as sales tool
  • Developing and overseeing Ingal Civil Products’ ‘Just-in-Time’ training program

In 2005, Geof returned to Atlantic Civil Products as a Senior Sales Engineer. In the last six years, Geof Coleman generously shared his expertise and has influenced our steady growth. We will continue to abide by Geof’s winning principles long after his retirement.
